Hundreds protest planned papal visit to Temple Mount

(March 21) - A crowd of several hundred, mostly religious Jews, protested yesterday afternoon at the Western Wall against the scheduled visit by Pope John Paul II to the Temple Mount.
The protest was mainly composed of prayers and included the blowing of four silver trumpets which could be heard throughout the Western Wall plaza.
The protest was organized by Hillel Weiss, a professor of Hebrew literature at Bar-Ilan University, who said the pope's coming to the Temple Mount would be the formalization by the Palestinians and the Vatican of giving the Temple Mount to the PLO with the cooperation of the Israeli government.

East Jerusalem schoolchildren waved Palestinian and Vatican flags as the
pope began a visit to the holy places in the Old City of Jerusalem this
morning.
Police made no attempt to remove the flags although some large Palestinian
flags were taken down from poles.
As the pontiff approached the Temple Mount, a hot-air balloon with the
Palestinian flag was flown over the area, Israel Radio reported.
Earlier, Palestinian leader Faisal Husseini had said there was no intention to
try to cause a provocation by flying the Palestinian flag over the Temple
Mount.
