Old transatlantic wounds within the United Nations security council were
reopened yesterday, as France condemned American unilateralism and demanded a
rapid transition to democracy and the United States defended the war and
insisted the move to Iraqi sovereignty would not be rushed.
On the face of it their positions seem to have hardened. "In an open world, no one can isolate themselves, no one can act alone in the name of all, and no one can accept the anarchy of a society without rules," said the French president, Jacques Chirac, in one of his most explicit attacks to date. "There is no alternative to the United Nations."

U.S. Plans to Attack Seven Muslim States

Presidential hopeful General Wesley Clark says the White House devised a
five-year plan after the 9/11 strikes to attack seven majority-Muslim
countries.
A former commander of NATO's forces in Europe, Clark claims he met a senior
military officer in Washington in November 2001 who told him the Bush
administration was planning to attack Iraq first before taking action against
Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan.
The general’s allegations surface in a new book, The Clark Critique, excerpts from which appear in the latest edition of the U.S. magazine Newsweek.

Headline: North Korean nuclear capability rattles US intelligence -- Detail Story |

| WASHINGTON:
Some American intelligence
analysts are becoming increasingly concerned that North Korea may have
three, four or even six nuclear weapons instead of the one or two the
CIA now estimates. Every new weapon would enhance North Korea’s nuclear capability and give the country significantly more authority at the negotiating table, experts say. One or two nuclear weapons would be considered last-resort devices, because once used they could no longer deter a US nuclear response. |
